We're Hiring a Managing Editor

This job opening is now closed.

Massive, a new startup that helps scientists translate their work for the public, is seeking a full-time Managing Editor to help us define and scale our unique editorial process. This role is our first full-time hire outside of the founding team, and offers the rare chance to shape the content strategy, editorial process and vision of a mission-driven media company with big ambitions.

About the role:

The Managing Editor’s immediate, primary responsibility will be to work with Massive’s founders to streamline the company’s editorial process. Once the process is defined, the ME will have three core responsibilities:

About you:

You are an editor with twin passions for running efficient processes and turning complex ideas into accessible, entertaining narratives that resonate with wide audiences. You pride yourself on your ability to learn new concepts quickly and walk the fine line between including enough depth to be accurate, but not so much that readers lose interest. You also enjoy mentoring and coaching new writers, helping them hone their craft and inspiring them to write at a level they have previously shied away from.

The ideal candidate will have a mix of the following skills and experience:

Requirements:

We don’t have any specific job requirements, and that’s deliberate. We are open to hiring candidates from a wide range of backgrounds and experience levels. The only real requirements are that you are a good human being, you are excited about Massive’s mission and the role, and can demonstrate, through past experience and during the interview process, that you can do the described role extremely well.

About us:

Massive (massivesci.com) is a startup dedicated to making the science that powers the modern world accessible to everyone. We think the best way to make science accessible is to help scientists communicate directly with the public in impactful ways using modern design, technology and distribution techniques. Massive’s founders have worked at Vice, Upworthy, Buzzfeed, Fast Company, HarvardX, Google, MuckRock and more. We are funded by Bloomberg Beta, General Electric, and individual investors.

We pride ourselves on having an uncommonly mature culture for a young startup. We regularly set clear goals. We make big decisions by making sure we’re all aligned enough to move forward, but we don’t build in roadblocks by requiring consensus. We have weekly retrospectives to talk about what’s going well and what we could do better. We have regular 1:1s to discuss long-term goals and how to improve our working relationships. Last, and most importantly, we believe the growing body of research that says that working too much is counter-productive, and avoid overwork by expressing clear, reasonable expectations and holding each other accountable for modeling healthy working behavior. All of this (and more about how we work) is written down in a handbook that we use as a reference point for our culture.

This job opening is now closed.

This is a full-time role. Salary is competitive, with great health benefits and unlimited vacation time with a minimum of 15 days per year (that we actually track and hold each other accountable for). As an early, key hire, this role will also receive a large equity stake in the company.

We are based in NYC but work remotely and are open to candidates working from anywhere in the United States.
