Code of Conduct

Massive is committed to providing a welcoming and harassment-free environment for members of all races, gender and trans statuses, sexual orientations, physical abilities, physical appearances, and beliefs. We’ve written this code of conduct not because we expect bad behavior from our members but because we believe a clear code of conduct is one necessary part of building a respectful organization.
Members agree to:

  • Be considerate in speech and actions, and actively seek to acknowledge and respect the boundaries of fellow members and our audience, online and offline.
  • Refrain from demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behavior and speech. Harassment includes, but is not limited to: deliberate intimidation; stalking; unwanted photography or recording; sustained or willful disruption of chats, calls, talks, or other events; inappropriate physical contact; use of sexual or discriminatory imagery, comments, or jokes; and unwelcome sexual attention. If you feel that someone has harassed you or otherwise treated you inappropriately, please alert a Massive employee via email or private message in Slack.
  • Take care of each other. Alert a Massive employee if you notice a dangerous situation, someone in distress, or violations of this code of conduct, even if they seem inconsequential.

If any member engages in harassing behavior to other members or our audience, online or offline, Massive may take any lawful action we deem appropriate, including but not limited to warning the offender or stripping Consortium membership from the offender. (If you feel you have been unfairly accused of violating this code of conduct, you should contact a Massive employee with a concise description of your grievance; any grievances filed will be considered by the entire Massive team.)

Science & Society

As scientists and communicators, Massive Consortium members have special obligations to society. We are inspired by Professor Sir David King’s seven principles for scientists:

  1. Act with skill and care, keep skills up to date
  2. Prevent corrupt practice and declare conflicts of interest
  3. Respect and acknowledge the work of other scientists
  4. Ensure that research is justified and lawful
  5. Minimize impacts on people, animals and the environment
  6. Discuss issues science raises for society
  7. Do not mislead; present evidence honestly

If any member violates these principles, Massive may take any lawful action we deem appropriate, including but not limited to warning the offender or stripping Consortium membership from the offender.
